RMHC Awards $163,500 In Scholarships To 136 Students
Las Vegas, NV, May 5, 2021 – Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Greater Las Vegas, along with McDonald’s® and its community partners, has awarded $163,500 in scholarships to 91 high school seniors and 45 returning college students through the organization’s Scholarship Program in 2021.
Since 1999, RMHC and its community partners have awarded more than $4.5M in scholarships to eligible students and alumni in Clark and Nye counties. RMHC Las Vegas is the largest, and one of only two remaining RMHC chapters in the world that offer a scholarship program.
“We’re so excited to be able to offer students financial assistance through the Ronald McDonald Scholarship Program,” said Alyson McCarthy, CEO of RMHC of Greater Las Vegas. “This school year has been incredibly difficult for students, and we heard from many applicants that the COVID-19 pandemic had lessened their families’ ability to help pay for college. So, we know how much this financial assistance is needed.”
Erin Carlson, one of RMHC’s 2021 scholarship recipients, is a student at Silverado High School, and will be attending Pennsylvania State University in the fall to study nursing. She says receiving this scholarship will help her fulfill a dream of going to her father’s favorite college.
“Being accepted to Penn State was hard because I knew it would put a financial strain on my family, which has taken some financial hits during the pandemic,” says Erin. “Receiving this scholarship gave my family that extra push we needed to know this was the right decision, and my dad was ecstatic. I’m so grateful for this scholarship!”
A portion of every Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper sold in McDonald’s stores helps support the RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Scholarship Program, as does a portion of every Happy Meal sold at all participating McDonald’s locations. Additionally, RMHC works with several community partners who provide scholarship funding, including Hispanic Educators Association of Nevada, The Village Foundation, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, The United Firefighters of Southern Nevada, and the James and Eva Martin Charitable Trust.
